Our History

The historic Church of the Resurrection, built in 1868, stands today as a significant New York City landmark. Its parish building, which opened in 1961, housed preschools throughout the late twentieth century until the Church founded Resurrection Episcopal Day School (REDS) in 1990.

REDS opened as a Montessori preschool recognized by the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) – a distinction it has proudly held for 35 years.

In 2009, under the leadership of former Head of School Laurie Boone Hogen, REDS became separately incorporated from the Church. Despite this structural change, the school continues to foster a strong sense of community and tradition through weekly chapel services held in the Church by the Church’s Rector, The Reverend Canon Barry E.B. Swain.

For many years, REDS exclusively served children in the Primary Program between the ages of 2.9 to 6 years old until 2023 when the school expanded its offerings with the introduction of the Toddler Program (2s Program), further strengthening its commitment to serving families of the Upper East Side and beyond.

Today, under the leadership of Head of School Sharon Lickerman, REDS strives to be a leading Montessori preschool in Manhattan for children and families from across the UES and surrounding NYC neighborhoods. Nestled on a tree-lined street, just two blocks from Central Park, REDS continues to offer an exceptional early childhood program rooted in the Montessori philosophy.
